Frequently asked questions
Students

If I take a theatre class, do I have to be in a show?
No.  Participation is entirely up to each individual.  That said, those that participate in our shows get a much more complete theatre education and experience.

How many shows does Jordan Theatre Company do each year?
For the 2022-2023 season, we will produce a fall production, a winter production, an entry for UIL One-Act Play, and an end of year student written/directed production.

What is the U.I.L. One-Act Play Competition?

U.I.L One-Act Play (OAP) is an opportunity for schools to compete with theatrical productions.  Each school performs a 40 minute play using unit set pieces (standardized set pieces) and props/costumes of their own choosing.  Students design and run lights and sound as well.  The full company (cast and crew) is made up of no more than 20 students.  They meet in early March for the first round of competition.  Each play is judged and scored by a panel of highly experienced and knowledgeable theatre educators.  The top 2-3 plays advance to the next round of competition.  The first round is Zone.  This is followed by District, Bi-District, Area, Region, and, finally, the State competition in Austin.

Are we doing a musical this year?
TBA

How do I audition for the cast of a production?
First, join Jordan Theatre Company.  Second, sign up for an audition time on the call board.  Third, prepare your audition material according to the requirements described on the audition notice.  All Jordan Theatre Company members may audition, but none are guaranteed a role.  Casting decisions are made by the director only.

How do I join the crew of a production?
First, join Jordan Theatre Company.  Second, sign up for an interview time on the call board.  All
Jordan Theatre Company members may interview, but none are guaranteed a crew position.  Crew decisions are made by the director only.

What is Jordan Theatre Company?
Jordan Theatre Company (JTC) is the student driven theatre club at Jordan High School.  Students must be a member to participate in extra-curricular productions.  Membership in the company is obtained by filling out a form (HERE) and paying the company dues of $65.  With your membership you will receive:
  • A JTC t-shirt
  • Professional Headshots
  • The opportunity to audition/interview as part of the cast or crew of a JTC production
  • Voting rights at JTC meetings
  • Invitation to participate in all JTC events
  • Invitation to the End-of-Year Theatre Banquet
  • Invitation to workshops held throughout the year
  • Opportunity to join the International Thespian Society
  • Opportunity to earn a theatre letter jacket

What is the International Thespian Society?
International Thespian Society is an honor society for students involved in high school theatre.
Jordan High School is home to ITS Troupe 10042, chartered spring of 2021.  Any student with at least 10 thespian points by May of each year is welcome to join the troupe.  Points are earned by participating in extra-curricular productions and volunteering at theatre events/work days.  Most students earn enough points in their first 2 productions.  Students who were active in a jr. thespian troupe in jr. high are granted 5 points.  Members of the thespian troupe can:
  • Run for an officer position in the spring.  The thespian officers are the leaders of the theatre department and will help to guide and shape the actions and image of the department.
  • Earn scholarships for college
  • Attend the Texas Thespian Convention and compete in various tech and performance events
  • Earn honor cords to wear at graduation
  • Earn the distinction of Honors Thespian (which looks GREAT on college applications)

Are theatre students required to join Jordan theatre company?
No.  Membership in Jordan Theatre Company is optional, but highly encouraged if you want to get the most out of your theatre education.  While the lessons learned in the various theatre courses are extremely valuable, it is in the extra-curricular productions that the knowledge and skills are applied and tested.

How often is the cast and crew required to be at rehearsal?
This depends on the role or crew assignment and the needs of the production.  Most cast/crew members can expect to be called 3-4 days a week.  Rehearsals can last between 2-3 hours and take place after school.  Some Saturday rehearsals last for 4-8 hours. The rehearsal process from the first read through to opening night is typically 6-7 weeks.  Calendars for each production can be found on the Callboard page.

What does it cost to be in the cast or crew of a JTC production?
All students who are cast in a role or placed in a tech position for a normal production, regardless of their role or position, will be required to pay a $50 production fee.  Fee for musicals is $100. This helps to defray the cost of the production, pays for a show t-shirt, and meals at long rehearsals.  The average production costs anywhere between $5,000 and $8,000.  Musicals run between $15,000 and $20,000.

Is it possible to get kicked out of a show?
Yes.  If a student is disruptive during rehearsals or performances, misses too many rehearsals, or becomes academically ineligible, they may be dismissed from the cast or crew at the discretion of the director.  All policies and guidelines regarding conduct and eligibility as it pertains to theatre can be found in the theatre student handbook.

If I get kicked out or I quit a show, do I get my money back?
Company dues and production fees are non-refundable.

What is the maximum air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?
About 14 meters per second for the European swallow.  (When you're a king you have to know these things.)
